Mother's hand (stenosing tenosynovitis of radial styloid process)

Mother's hand ( stenosing tenosynovitis of radial styloid process )

definition

The scientific name of the mother's hand is stenosing tenosynovitis of the radial styloid process . Due to excessive stretching and outstretching of the thumb or excessive force, repeated friction causes the tendon synovium and retinaculum of the wrist to thicken, compressing the underlying tendons, causing the tendons to slide. A stuck feeling, or adhesions and inflammation may result, causing pain and swelling on the side of the wrist near the thumb.

Self-test

First straighten your arms, place your thumb in the palm of your hand, grasp the thumb with four fingers, and then use force to press your wrist down. If you feel pain on the radial side of your wrist, it is your mother's hand.

The main symptoms

1. Inability to exert force or persistent pain on the radial side of the wrist, at the radial styloid process (more severe when getting up in the morning).

2 It is often associated with symptoms such as tightness of the upper limbs and local swelling, and will extend upward to the forearm and downward to the thumb. The pain is more severe when the thumb is raised (extensor thumb muscle).

3. Twisting movements of the wrist and hand, or repeated straightening and flexing of the thumb will aggravate the pain. For example, twisting towels, writing and other activities that use thumb strength.

4 If left untreated for a long time, the tendon sheath may become hypertrophic and form a raised ganglion cyst.

Main cause : Some chronic overuse of the wrist and thumb. For example

1. Use your hands or wrists to support the baby’s head for a long time.

2. Use keyboard, mouse and scissors for a long time, as well as hold dinner plates, stir-fry and other tasks that require a high degree of thumb and wrist use.

3. Excessive use of mobile phones for typing, especially using the mobile phone with one hand, puts too much pressure on the thumb.

Treatment recommendations
Here are some common anecdotal treatment recommendations/treatment options, including:

Daily aspects:

1. Try to avoid making repetitive wrist/thumb movements and allow the inflamed area to rest.

2. In the case of acute inflammation and swelling, you can try ice compresses to reduce swelling; in the chronic inflammation stage, warm compresses below 45° will be used.

3. Perform exercises that strengthen muscles and relieve pain.

4 Wearing wristbands specially designed for mothers’ hands can effectively reduce pain caused by swinging.
